Why I Gave Up on the 3 Day Refresh

One of my biggest Pet Peeves is being told what to do, how to do, or when to do, I think a lot of it comes from being an only child, I just like to make decisions on my own time. 

This week I had convinced Charger to try the 3 Day Refresh from Beachbody. I was really excited, as I know a lot of people who were losing between 3 and 6 pounds in only 3 short days. They were being less bloated and losing inches as well – who wouldn’t want that? The best part was you got to eat all day – fruits, veggies, and 4 shakes – Shakeology, Vanilla Fresh (high protein shake), and a Fiber Shake. They all actually tasted awesome (I drink Shakeology as breakfast each morning, but had no idea what to expect with the other two).  

Here is how my day went – 

On my way to work – Shakeology 

Once I got to work – 12 strawberries 

Mid-morning – Fiber Shake 

Lunch – Vanilla Fresh Shake, Green Beans that were sauteed in some olive oil with lemon, and 1/2 an apple.

Lots of water throughout the day, one cup of coffee, and some green tea. 

Afternoon snack – Avocado and Tomato  

I passed on ordering Thai food at work and homemade muffins. It was tough – but I stuck to it. Charger even followed the plan – just at slightly different times (example his Shakeology was drank at 4am, his Fiber Shake before he went to bed after his shift and his lunch with he woke up around 4pm). We were both in this together and it was awesome! 

I was feeling pretty good and motivated- but somewhere in the middle of my Avocado and Tomato bowl – I lost it. I got really emotional and just wanted to spend the night with Charger – and not have to make decisions on the fact that I was making veggie stir fry as our dinner. Now, I love veggies – but I had turned down tickets to the Pirate game for Charger and I – because we wouldn’t be able to eat anything at the ball park – and then it sort of spiraled down from there.

Charger was super supportive and would have kept up with the plan – but we ultimately decided to go to Narcisi Winery (one of our favorite places) and have Spinach/Artichoke Dip, Cesar Salads,  Pizza, dessert, and of course wine. The night was so beautiful – and I just completely caved in. I realize that even though no one was telling me what to do – I was in fact the one that made the decision to try the 3 day refresh – that just being tied to a specific plan was not a good route for me. I may try it again sometime – but this week just wasn’t good timing – I wanted to go out for Charger and I’s weekly date night, I wanted a glass of wine at Paint Nite – I wanted to make decisions not based on a restricted food plan. I mean take a look at this pizza- I think we made the right decision and it was totally 100% worth it: 


(Sidenote: If you leave in the Pittsburgh area and have never tried Narcisi Winery in Gibsonia – you are truly missing out – and I encourage you to go and try it. I am sure I have mentioned it in posts before- it is just a wonderful place- that makes awesome homemade Italian food and wine). 

Am I happy that I quit? – No, but I think knowing that I could have pushed through was enough for me. I know I could have done it and I know that some day I will. I know life is based around decisions about food- and Charger and I could have easily had a fun date night walking the parking, hanging out at home, and cooking, but it just wasn’t what either of us wanted or needed that night. And, let’s face it I am a total foodie. I love trying new restaurants and recipes. I just have to focus more on finding my own personal balance and doing what works for me. This life is all about being happy – and that afternoon I wasn’t happy, so I made the decision to alter my actions to correct those unhappy feelings. 

Do I think the 3 day refresh is a good jump start to healthier eating habits? Absolutely! I plan to take what I learned throughout the day and integrate it into my meals – more fruits, more veggies, more water. I am going to try and be more aware of what I eat during the day – especially at work – where I tend to mindlessly eat. 

The good news is that we have tons of veggies in the house now – so I plan to make some awesome side dishes and meals over the next few days! – Including Kale Chips -which are currently my favorite. Kale – drizzled with some olive oil – seasoned however you want (I usually use pepper and sea salt) and baked at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes (flipping half way through).
